Awareness programs were organized at AIIMS Rishikesh on the occasion of ‘World Pediatric Surgery Day’. This year’s theme focused on the role of pediatric surgeons in addressing urinary problems in children. Pediatric surgery specialists provided patients and their caregivers with valuable information on the topic. Experts highlighted that cases of kidney and liver cancer in children are found to be higher in Uttarakhand, emphasizing the need for special vigilance.
Under the guidance of AIIMS Rishikesh Executive Director Prof. Meenu Singh, specialists from the Pediatric Surgery Department explained congenital diseases in children and their treatment through surgery in detail during the awareness program.
Department Head and Medical Superintendent Prof. Satya Sri advised parents to remain sensitive to their children’s health and stay alert to symptoms of diseases. She explained the importance of precise and high-quality sonography during pregnancy to detect congenital diseases in the fetus at an early stage.
Prof. Satya Sri also mentioned that if cancer symptoms are detected in young children, there is no need to panic. Timely and appropriate treatment can completely cure the disease.
During the program, pediatric surgeons provided information on common surgical conditions in children, their symptoms, precautions, and timely treatment. These included:
- Frequent urination in children
- Bedwetting at night
- Congenital problems of the testicles
- Congenital urinary tract and genital issues
- Hernia, hydrocele, urinary obstruction
- Urinary infections and burning sensation
The experts also emphasized the need for special awareness regarding cases of kidney and liver cancer in children in Uttarakhand.
They also highlighted the dangers of children accidentally swallowing small food particles like candy, salty snacks, peanuts, or other items, which can get stuck in their windpipe, causing severe complications. Parents were encouraged to stay vigilant and informed about such situations.
It is noteworthy that World Pediatric Surgery Day is celebrated annually on December 29 to raise awareness about congenital diseases in children and their surgical treatment.
