Uttarakhand Silk Federation Profit Soars in 2024–25

Dehradun, 25 June 2025 – The implementation of the “Complete Value Chain” system in the Uttarakhand Cooperative Silk Federation has led to a significant improvement in its commercial activities. By focusing on silk production, yarn-making, designing, packaging, and marketing, the federation successfully sold silk products and yarn worth ₹2.34 crore under the ‘Doon Silk’ brand in the financial year 2024–25. This resulted in a net profit of over ₹1 crore, marking a major achievement for the Federation.

A Step Towards Self-Reliance

Under the leadership of Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat, Minister of Cooperation, Uttarakhand, the Federation is making rapid progress toward self-reliance. The “Complete Value Chain” approach has strengthened its commercial operations, significantly increasing the production and sale of silk products. Silkworm Rearers & Production Chain

More than 6,500 mulberry silkworm rearers are working across the state under the Federation, of which 80% are affiliated with the Federation’s primary cooperative societies. These rearers collectively produce around 3 lakh kg of silk cocoons annually. At the Selakui Growth Center, these cocoons are processed into silk yarn, which is then used by local weavers through handlooms, powerlooms, and other weaving methods to produce a variety of silk garments. These are marketed under the Doon Silk brand.

Flagship Projects

1. “Farm to Fabric” Project

Under this initiative, 200 beneficiaries in Dehradun and Haridwar districts have been selected. From mulberry tree plantation to fabric production, beneficiaries are involved in every stage. They receive:

  • ₹1.12 lakh as 100% subsidy for silkworm rearing home construction

  • 300 free mulberry saplings

  • 100% free silkworm rearing equipment

The aim is to promote mulberry cultivation and silk production.

2. “Waste to Best” Scheme

This scheme ensures the utilization of waste cocoons post-reeling by producing hand-spun yarn through a technique called katghai. It serves two purposes:

  • Makes use of otherwise waste silk cocoons

  • Generates employment for tribal women

The yarn is used to produce mufflers and blended shawls, which are in high market demand.

“The implementation of the Complete Value Chain system has rapidly boosted the Federation’s business. Selling ₹2.34 crore worth of silk products and earning over ₹1 crore in profit in FY 2024–25 reflects the state government’s commitment to strengthening cooperative systems.”
Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat, Minister of Cooperation, Uttarakhand
