AIIMS Rishikesh gives new life to four-legged newborn

Doctors' hard work paid off, success was achieved through team work

Rishikesh

A child born with four legs and a deformed body was given a normal and developed form through surgery by a team of expert doctors at AIIMS Rishikesh. This child, who had an abnormal body, can now lead a normal life like other children.

When the nine-month-old child was brought to the Pediatric Surgery OPD at AIIMS Rishikesh on March 6, 2024, everyone was shocked to see the child’s appearance. The parents were deeply distressed, and the child was also suffering physically due to the deformity.

Professor Satya Shri, Head of the Pediatric Surgery Department and Medical Superintendent at AIIMS, explained that the child had two normal legs, but two additional legs were in an abnormal position. Additionally, there was a large swelling on the upper back near the spine. The child was born in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, and is the fourth child of the parents. Upon seeing the child’s condition, the Pediatric Surgery team prepared extensively for the surgery and consulted doctors from other related departments to finalize the plan.

Dr. Inono Yoshu, a pediatric surgeon, stated that the procedure was nothing short of a challenge. Various physical and internal examinations were conducted on the child, followed by detailed discussions on the surgical approach. After collaboration with other departments, the surgery plan was finalized.

Dr. Yoshu further explained that while a normal person has two kidneys, this child had only one. During the highly complex surgery, which lasted approximately 8 hours, the surgical team had to exercise extreme caution regarding every aspect of the child’s life. After being monitored for three weeks post-surgery, the child was found to be in a stable condition and was discharged a few days ago.

Professor Meenu Singh, Executive Director of AIIMS Rishikesh, praised the surgical team. She stated that the work done by the specialist doctors is nothing less than an achievement.

Departments Involved in the Surgical Team:

  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Pediatrics
  • Orthopedics
  • Plastic Surgery
  • Neurosurgery
  • Interventional Radiology
  • Anesthesia

A Malformed Twin:
When the child was born, the family was alarmed. Initially, they took the child to various hospitals in Muzaffarnagar. According to AIIMS doctors, the child was supposed to be a twin, but due to complications during fetal development, the second fetus did not fully form. Only the lower part of the second fetus’s body developed, which merged with the body of the first child. This is why the child was born in a deformed state.
