Robotic Knee Surgery Week at AIIMS Rishikesh, 16 successful knee transplants

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh organized a “Robotic Knee Surgery Week,” during which the Department of Orthopedics successfully performed 16 robotic knee replacements using cutting-edge technology. The surgeries were carried out under the guidance of Prof. Pankaj Kandwal, Head of the Department, and Prof. Roop Bhushan Kalia, Head of the Arthroplasty Unit.

According to expert doctors, robotic technology ensures greater precision, safer outcomes, and faster recovery compared to traditional knee replacement methods. The technique uses 3D imaging and computer assistance to achieve better alignment and ligament balancing, offering patients long-term benefits.

AIIMS Rishikesh Executive Director Prof. (Dr.) Meenu Singh hailed the event as historic and praised the Department of Orthopedics. She stated,

“Bringing such advanced technology to the public is a significant step in the field of medicine. AIIMS Rishikesh is always eager to adopt new innovations to provide the best possible healthcare. The institute plans to incorporate robotic surgery as a permanent feature in the future to improve patients’ health and quality of life.”

Prof. Pankaj Kandwal added that during this special week, 10 patients from Uttarakhand and Western Uttar Pradesh benefitted from this service. These surgeries were conducted free of additional cost, providing patients with high-quality care.

Prof. Roop Bhushan Kalia delivered a special lecture on the functioning of robotic knee replacement and highlighted how it delivers more accurate results than traditional methods and significantly improves patient outcomes.
