The service heroes of AIIMS Rishikesh set an example

Five units of blood given to a six year old child suffering from blood cancer

Rishikesh, March 10, 2025

The ‘Sevaveers’ deployed at AIIMS Rishikesh are not only proving to be helpful for patients and their attendants but are also donating blood to save lives when needed. Recently, these volunteers set an example of humanity by donating five units of blood to a six-year-old child.

The child, suffering from blood cancer, hails from Rudrapur (Haldwani). His mother shared that he had been experiencing fever and excessive sweating for some time. When local hospitals in Haldwani could not diagnose his illness, they brought him to AIIMS Rishikesh, where doctors confirmed that he had blood cancer, which was spreading rapidly. The child’s blood level was critically low, and doctors urgently required 4-5 units of blood for his treatment.

Being new to Rishikesh and without any local contacts, the mother struggled to arrange blood donors. She was sitting in the AIIMS premises when a Sevaveer approached her and inquired about her problem. Upon learning about the urgent need for blood, the Sevaveers organized a donation and arranged five units of blood for the child. They also assured her that if needed, more volunteers from their team would come forward to donate.

This is not the first time that AIIMS Sevaveers have stepped up for patients. Last year, they donated eight units of blood to a three-year-old child from Nainital. The child’s mother and family expressed deep gratitude towards these lifesaving volunteers.

AIIMS Executive Director Prof. Meenu Singh and Medical Superintendent Prof. Satya Shri praised the Sevaveers for their dedicated efforts in patient welfare. They emphasized that beyond their regular duties, such acts of selfless service are truly commendable.

Who are the AIIMS Sevaveers?

The Sevaveer team was formed under the initiative of AIIMS Rishikesh Executive Director Prof. (Dr.) Meenu Singh to assist patients, especially elderly, differently-abled, and helpless individuals. These volunteers provide essential information, guidance, and assistance to visitors. The Sevaveer Help Desks operate 24/7 at two key locations:

  • Near the Trauma Center
  • Ground floor near Neuro OPD in the hospital building

These dedicated volunteers continue to be a lifeline for patients in critical situations.
