A screw swallowed while playing sports got stuck in the lungs of a seven year old child, AIIMS Rishikesh saved his life.

The child had reached the OPD of Pediatrics Department of AIIMS on the complaint of vomiting and cough.

A seven-year-old child was brought to the pediatric OPD at AIIMS with complaints of vomiting and coughing. Upon examination, doctors discovered a screw lodged in his lung. The child’s parents informed the doctors that he had accidentally swallowed the screw while playing.

A team of doctors from the Pulmonary Medicine Department’s Bronchoscopy Lab successfully removed the screw from the child’s lung, bringing him out of danger. The child is now completely healthy.

According to Professor Dr. Ruchi Dua of the Pulmonary Medicine Department, Dr. Vyas Kumar Rathore from the Pediatrics Department was informed that a seven-year-old child from Roorkee had been brought in for a check-up. Tests revealed that a screw was stuck in the child’s lung.

The parents informed the pediatricians that the child had been suffering from vomiting and coughing for 15 days.

Dr. Vyas Kumar Rathore stated that initial investigations, including a chest X-ray and CT scan, confirmed the presence of a screw in the child’s lung.

Using Flexible Bronchoscopy in the Bronchoscopy Lab of the Pulmonary Medicine Department, the medical team successfully removed the screw from the child’s lung. The child is now completely healthy and safe.

According to Dr. Girish Sindhwani, Head of the Pulmonary Medicine Department, the medical team at AIIMS Rishikesh has successfully handled several complex cases. The Bronchoscopy Lab has previously removed bulb filaments, peanut fragments, and other foreign objects from patients’ lungs.
