AIIMS Rishikesh created history, saved the life of a patient by removing a 35 kg bone tumor

35kg Bone Tumor Successfully Removed at AIIMS Rishikesh

Rishikesh, 24 June 2025 – In a landmark achievement in treating complex medical conditions, AIIMS Rishikesh has set a new record by successfully removing a 35-kilogram cancerous bone tumor from the leg of a 27-year-old man. According to the doctors, this is the first successful surgery of such a massive tumor in the country, giving the patient a new lease on life.

The patient, a resident of Sambhal district, Uttar Pradesh, had lost all hope. But now, after this life-saving surgery, his smile has returned. Not only did the operation save his life, but it also relieved him from the unbearable pain caused by the growing cancerous tumor.

Case Overview:

According to a press release from AIIMS:

  • The patient was diagnosed six years ago with an unusual growth in his left leg, which started as a small lump and gradually grew larger, eventually affecting his ability to sit, stand, or move properly.

  • Despite visiting hospitals in Moradabad and Delhi, the condition worsened over time.

  • The growing size of the tumor rendered him immobile and bedridden.

After someone suggested AIIMS Rishikesh, he underwent thorough medical evaluations. The Orthopedics Department successfully removed the tumor through surgery on 9 June 2025. The patient is now recovering in the ward and is expected to be discharged soon.

A Medical Marvel:

  • The removed bone tumor measured 53x24x19 inches and weighed 34.7 kg.

  • Before surgery, the total weight of the patient’s left leg was 41 kg, which has now been reduced to just 6.3 kg.

This complex surgery was led by a multidisciplinary team due to the tumor’s size, cancerous nature, and compromised blood circulation in the affected area. Even the slightest mistake could have been fatal.
