AIIMS Rishikesh Saves Life of Man with Severed Neck Due to Chinese Manjha
Complex Surgery Restores Functionality Despite Severe Trauma
Rishikesh, March 29, 2025
A man from Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, suffered a severe neck injury when a Chinese manjha (kite string) slit nearly half of his neck. A specialized team of trauma surgeons at AIIMS Rishikesh successfully performed a life-saving surgery, reconstructing the damaged food pipe, windpipe, and carotid artery that supplies blood to the brain.
A Critical Grade 4 Trauma Case
The incident occurred while the victim was riding a two-wheeler on Haridwar Highway to seek medical treatment for his son at AIIMS Rishikesh. The sharp Chinese manjha cut deep into his neck, causing excessive bleeding and life-threatening damage.
Initially, he was rushed to a nearby hospital and later referred to AIIMS on ventilator support. Upon arrival at AIIMS Trauma Center, doctors noted severe blood loss, absent pulse, and no detectable blood pressure or heartbeat.
Expert Team Performs Life-Saving Surgery
The trauma emergency team immediately stabilized the patient with blood transfusions before initiating surgery.
The surgical team was led by Dr. Ruby, assisted by Dr. Santosh and Dr. Rohit under the supervision of:
-
Prof. Kamar Azam (Head, Trauma Surgery Department)
-
Dr. Madhur Uniyal & Dr. Neeraj Kumar (Trauma Surgeons)
-
Dr. Ankin & Dr. Reena (Anesthesia Department)
The surgery was highly complex and delicate, as the food pipe, windpipe, and carotid artery were completely severed. Post-surgery, the patient was kept under ventilator support in the ICU for seven days.
Successful Recovery
-
The patient is now breathing and eating normally.
-
He has no difficulty speaking post-surgery.
-
There are no neurological deficits, indicating a complete recovery.
Doctors Warn Against the Dangers of Chinese Manjha
AIIMS trauma experts have warned that injuries from Chinese manjha can be fatal. They advise two-wheeler riders to wear helmets and cover their necks with scarves or mufflers to minimize the risk.
The incident highlights the urgent need for stricter regulations on the use of Chinese manjha, which continues to cause severe injuries and fatalities.
