The Department of Medical Education plans to commence operations of the Government Medical College in Pithoragarh by the academic session 2026-27. Preparations at the departmental level are in full swing. Approximately 45% of the construction work, including the main building of the medical college, has been completed, and instructions have been given to departmental officials and executing agencies to complete the remaining work promptly.
Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat, Uttarakhand’s Minister of Medical Health and Medical Education, inspected the Government Medical College in Pithoragarh during his visit to the Kumaon division. He reviewed the progress of the administrative building and other construction works with departmental officials and representatives of the executing agency.
In a statement to the media, Dr. Rawat stated that the state government is constructing the medical college in Pithoragarh at a cost of ₹750 crore, of which over 45% of the construction has been completed. He directed the officials to complete the remaining work within the next six months.
He added that the government aims to commence formal operations of the medical college by 2026. Preparations at the departmental level are in full swing for this purpose. The process of appointing faculty and medical staff for various departments of the medical college has also begun. Additionally, officials have been instructed to apply to the National Medical Commission (NMC) in 2025 for operational approval.
Dr. Rawat further informed that the Indian government has granted permission to transfer 1.06 hectares of forest department land adjacent to the medical college premises for its use.
After inspecting the medical college, Dr. Rawat held a joint meeting with officials from the school education, higher education, and health departments at the district headquarters auditorium. He instructed officials to ensure better healthcare services for patients visiting the district hospital and other medical centers in the district.
He also directed the education department to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for dilapidated schools and submit it to the government at the earliest. Dr. Rawat emphasized that the state government is committed to strengthening and making health and education systems more accessible. He urged officials to remain vigilant and dedicated to their responsibilities to meet public expectations effectively.
