Congress leader Mohit Uniyal, who has been a national spokesperson for the party, has resigned as the Parvadoon District President after accepting responsibility for the defeat in the Doiwala Municipal Council and Rishikesh Municipal Corporation elections. He submitted his resignation to Congress State President Karan Mahara.
Uniyal has played a significant role in Youth Congress and NSUI at the national level. He was actively involved in the Bharat Jodo Yatra, walking approximately 3,500 km and has also conducted village walks in Uttarakhand to connect with the people. He believes that foot marches are an effective way to understand local issues and concerns.
“Hum Sharminda Hain” Campaign
Under this initiative, Uniyal walked with school children who travel 12-16 km daily to reach their schools from remote villages like Haldwadi to Dharkot, Kandoli to Itharna, and Haldwadi to Rangad village. He emphasized that solutions must be sought from the ground level, not by sitting in offices.
“We are ashamed” – Children walking 12 km daily, including a 3 km steep climb, for education.
“We are ashamed” – That’s why we walked 8 km with schoolchildren, carrying their school bags.
“We are ashamed” – That’s why we spent a day as a ‘Ghassari’ (grass collector) to understand their struggles.
Election Journey & Ticket Controversy
In the 2022 Uttarakhand Assembly elections, the Congress party declared Uniyal as the candidate for Doiwala but revoked his ticket within two days. Despite this, he did not protest the party’s decision and instead urged his supporters to work for the new party candidate.
Following the ticket withdrawal, Uniyal embarked on a village walk to Barkot instead of engaging in political conflict, reinforcing his commitment to public service beyond political positions. He stated:
“Serving the people doesn’t require a position. If I can help educate even two underprivileged children, my life’s purpose will be fulfilled.”
