ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation (ICAR-IISWC), Dehradun, inaugurated an Agri-Processing-Cum-Custom Hiring Center in Khatar Gram Panchayat, Kalsi Block, Dehradun.
This initiative, under the SC-SP scheme, aims to enable farmers to process their agricultural produce locally, reducing time, cost, and labor while improving quality.
Dr. M. Muruganandam, Head of PME and KM Units and Coordinator of SC-SP and TSP programs, along with project team members Dr. Indu Rawat (Senior Scientist) and Dr. Sadikul Islam (Scientist), handed over a six HP diesel engine-powered threshing unit to the farmers. This facility eliminates the need for farmers to transport their produce to Vikasnagar, enabling local-level processing and improving efficiency.
Formation of Focus Groups:
To ensure smooth operation, repair, and maintenance of the equipment, a focus group was formed from nearby households, with a core management group led by progressive farmer Alam. These groups were formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) facilitated by the project team.
Distribution of Domestic Equipment:
The team announced plans to add grinders and small agricultural tools to the center. Additionally, two women self-help groups (SHGs), previously established under this scheme, were provided with essential household and community items such as storage bins, spatulas, thermal flasks, and frying pans. Each household also received an electric kettle and manual pruning cutter for personal use.
To promote livelihood opportunities for women, soap-making materials were distributed by Dr. Indu Rawat, while Dr. Sadikul Islam highlighted health improvements achieved through these interventions. Certificates were also distributed to participants of an entrepreneurship development training program organized by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, Dehradun, and coordinated earlier by Dr. Rawat.
Progress Review:
The team reviewed progress on various initiatives implemented in six settlements over the past two years. These included irrigation pipes, water tanks, improved seeds, and saplings. They also distributed chicks and assessed training programs for advanced farming, poultry farming, and healthcare.
Around 50 farmers and women groups from Kolhar, Somya, Kofti, Sundaraya, and other nearby villages in Khatar Gram Panchayat participated in the event and expressed gratitude to the scientists and the institute for their continued support and guidance.
